Reading List – December 2023

One way to learn about the career world other than working/living it is to read books and/or ask the educators in the community which ones are best reads. Here’s a list and comments of the books I read and/or plan to read. Some, I have done videos on at my YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@careersbythepeople

From Book to My YouTube Channel:

From Classroom to Career: How to Network, Nail the Interview and Navigate for Success by Shirley Morrison

I Have Something to Say: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking by John Bowe

Honestly Speaking: How the way we Communicate Transforms Leadership, Love and Life by Andrew Blotky

Books I recall that I read:

Choosing a Vocation by Frank Parsons (A reprint of the Original 1909 work) – If you are in the careers field you have to read what the Godfather wrote. If you are a historian, it’s an interesting read as Frank wrote it around 1906-08 so the view of occupations are interesting and how he chooses workers.

Making School Relevant with Individualized Learning Plans: Helping Students Create Their Own Career and Life Goals by V. Scott Solberg – I read the book, added notes and when I mail it back to my house from the road the post office lost it. From memory it was informative read.

How to Get the Most out of College: 127 Ways to Make Connections, Make it Work for You, and Make a Difference by Elliot Felix – it had some great tips…..

Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs by John Bowe, Marisa Bowe, Sabin Streeter and Rose Kernochan – in my view, if you want to learn about occupations this is a must read. It’s the view from the workers about their jobs. Published in 2000.

Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do by Studs Terkel – the power of Terkel’s book is exponential. People work for 40 years yet no one wrote about it prior? Wow……how did he arrive at this concept is mind blowing. This was published in 1974. Nothing for 26 years until Gig exploded onto the scenes and 23 years later until Careers By the People. Really?

Blue-Collar Cash: Love Your Work, Secure Your Future, and Find Happiness for Life by Ken Rusk. Ken does more than talk careers, he talks lives. His goal is to help with the whole life of a person. If college isn’t your bag, there’s tons of opportunity with blue collar gigs. Please understand, you can start as a carpenters assistant and soon run a multi-million dollar operation as well as enjoy your occupation.

A Success Story in Public Education: The Clarence T. C. Ching PUEO Program at Punahou and Its Partnership-Marriage Methodology by Carl Ackerman. Carl is a legend in Hawaii. With the power of Punahou he extended the vision to the many on the islands that could use from that vision the opportunity to learn during the summer months pole-vaulting many from the less fortunate into opportunities beyond their beliefs.
